Sr. Kathy Stein: She is 'Woman of Distinction'
Orange County News
March 9, Vol 97, Issue 19

Sister Kathy Stein, CSJ has been program director of Thomas House for 12 years. Founded in 1987, Thomas House has been providing a safe supportive environment and the resources necessary for homeless families to remain together while becoming independent and self-sufficient.

The families that come to Thomas House Shelter are provided with an apartment, food, clothing, licensed childcare, job training, budgeting assistance, bus passes or car repair and counseling. These services are made possible by many federal, state and county grants and private donations.

Organizing and managing the programs at Thomas House Shelter has been an on-going effort headed by Sister Kathy, but is only one of the many efforts she has participated in. Sister Kathy started out as an elementary school teacher. She then earned her master's in religious studies and began working in adult education in South Central Los Angeles.

Her life of service eventually led her to Orange County and finally to Thomas House Shelter. Sister Kathy may be the director of programs, but she is also the resident financial director, secretary, media liaison, landlord and even Lamaze coach.

"We are honored to recognize Sister Kathy for all she has done, but especially for her ongoing efforts to help empower families to overcome the challenge of homelessness," said Mary Ann Hamamura, president -elect of Soroptimist International of Garden Grove. "Our organization focuses on what is best for women, and we all know that enabling women and children with skills is key to improving lives and economic status. Sister Kathy is certainly worthy of our appreciation and recognition."
