Sisters Fran Dempsey, Clare Pelkey and Doreen Glynn of the Albany Province of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet participated in a Women Against War vigil and leafleting at the Empire Plaza Food Festival. This activity was part of WAW’s Iran Project which works through education and advocacy to support diplomacy with Iran and to prevent US or Israeli military against Iran. An attack on Iran will lead to twice the human and financial cost as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan combined, due to Iran’s large population and vast geography. We are urging Congress and the President to use the recent election of a more moderate Iranian President, Hassan Rouhani, as an opening to negotiations with Iran. Dr. Rouhani campaigned on the promise to “pursue a policy of reconciliation and peace” and has since promised “constructive interaction with the outside world.” He has been critical of the nuclear “extremism” of outgoing President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
